How to Clean a Blender

A 30-second self-clean after every use prevents most buildup. For stains, odors, or a thorough clean of the blade assembly and gasket, this guide covers quick-rinse and deep-clean methods, dishwasher safety, and how to remove stubborn residue.

Quick Clean: After Every Use (30 Seconds)

Do this immediately after blending — before residue dries on the blades.

1

Rinse immediately

As soon as you finish blending, add warm water to the jar — about halfway. A quick rinse while residue is still fresh takes 30 seconds and prevents the need for scrubbing later.

2

Add a drop of dish soap

Add one small drop of dish soap to the water in the jar. Place the jar back on the base.

3

Blend on low for 30 seconds

Run the blender on low speed for 30 seconds. The blending action scrubs the interior walls and the blade assembly without you touching the blade.

4

Rinse thoroughly

Pour out the soapy water and rinse with clean warm water until no soap remains. Tip the jar upside down on a drying rack or wipe dry.

Deep Clean: Weekly or As Needed

For removing stubborn residue, cleaning the blade gasket, or addressing stains and odors.

1

Disassemble the blade assembly

Most blenders have a removable blade assembly that unscrews from the bottom of the jar. Unscrew carefully — blades are very sharp. Many assemblies include a gasket (rubber seal) that should also be removed and cleaned separately.

2

Wash all parts by hand

Wash the jar, lid, blade assembly, and gasket with warm soapy water. Use a bottle brush to reach the bottom of the jar and around the blade assembly. Pay special attention to the gasket — residue hides in the groove where it seats.

3

Clean the base

Wipe the motor base with a damp cloth. Never submerge the base in water — it contains the motor and electrical components. For sticky spills, use a cloth lightly dampened with a mild soap solution, then wipe with a clean damp cloth.

4

Remove stains with baking soda

For stains (common with turmeric, berries, or spinach), make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it to the stained areas inside the jar. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes, then scrub gently with a non-abrasive sponge and rinse.

5

Remove odors

If the jar smells of garlic, onion, or fish after cleaning, fill it halfway with warm water, add a tablespoon of white vinegar or baking soda, and blend for 30 seconds. Rinse well. For persistent odors, let the vinegar solution sit in the jar for 10 minutes before blending.

6

Dry before reassembling

Air dry all parts completely before reassembling, especially the gasket. Trapping moisture between the gasket and the blade assembly can cause mold and odor. Reassemble gently — hand-tighten the blade assembly without forcing it.

Dishwasher Safety by Part

PartDishwasher Safe?Notes
Blender jar (glass)Usually yesTop rack only; check your manual — some glass jars are dishwasher-safe
Blender jar (plastic)Often yesTop rack only; avoid heated dry cycles which can warp plastic over time
LidUsually yesTop rack; check for any silicone gaskets in lid center caps — those may need hand washing
Blade assemblySometimesMany are dishwasher-safe but blades dull faster in dishwashers; hand washing extends blade life
Gasket / rubber sealVariesCheck manual; dishwasher heat can degrade rubber over time — hand washing is safer
Motor baseNoNever dishwasher or submerge — wipe with damp cloth only

Always verify with your model's manual — dishwasher safety varies by brand and model.

Removing Stains and Odors

Removing stains (turmeric, berries, spinach)

  1. 1.Make a paste of baking soda and a small amount of water
  2. 2.Apply to stained areas inside the jar
  3. 3.Let sit 10–15 minutes
  4. 4.Scrub with a soft sponge and rinse thoroughly

Avoid abrasive scrubbers on plastic — they create micro-scratches that trap stains.

Removing odors (garlic, fish, strong spices)

  1. 1.Fill jar halfway with warm water
  2. 2.Add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or baking soda
  3. 3.Let soak 10 minutes (for persistent odors)
  4. 4.Blend 30 seconds, pour out, rinse thoroughly

Store the jar with the lid off — sealed jars accumulate odor faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you clean a blender without taking it apart?

The self-cleaning method works for everyday use: add warm water to the jar until halfway, add one drop of dish soap, place on the base, and blend on low for 30 seconds. Pour out the soapy water and rinse with clean water. This method removes most fresh residue effectively. For deep cleaning — especially stains, odors, or dried-on smoothie — you need to disassemble and wash each part separately, including the blade assembly and gasket.

Can you put a blender jar in the dishwasher?

It depends on the material. Glass jars are generally dishwasher-safe on the top rack. Plastic jars vary by brand — many are dishwasher-safe on the top rack, but avoid the heated dry cycle, which can warp plastic. Blade assemblies can go in the dishwasher but may dull faster than with hand washing. The motor base must never go in the dishwasher — wipe it with a damp cloth only. Always check your specific model's manual before dishwashing.

How do you get stains out of a blender jar?

Turmeric, berries, and green smoothies are common culprits. Make a paste of baking soda and a small amount of water, apply it to the stained interior, and let it sit for 10–15 minutes. Scrub with a soft sponge and rinse. For stubborn stains, fill the jar with warm water and a tablespoon of white vinegar, let soak for 15 minutes, then scrub and rinse. Avoid abrasive scrubbers on plastic jars — they create micro-scratches that trap stains further.

How do you remove odors from a blender?

Coffee, garlic, fish, and strong spices can linger in plastic jars. Fill the jar halfway with warm water, add one tablespoon of white vinegar or baking soda, and blend for 30 seconds. Rinse thoroughly. For severe odors, let the vinegar or baking soda solution sit in the jar for 10–15 minutes before blending and rinsing. Leaving the lid off when storing also helps — trapped air in a closed jar accumulates odor faster.

How often should I deep clean a blender?

Quick-clean (the self-cleaning blend method) after every use keeps the jar hygienic for daily use. A full deep clean — disassembling the blade assembly and gasket, washing all parts separately, and wiping the base — should happen every 1–2 weeks with regular use, or immediately if you blend anything that leaves residue behind (like nut butters, thick smoothies, or garlic-heavy sauces). Replace the gasket if it cracks, warps, or develops a permanent odor.

Is it safe to blend hot liquids in a blender?

Only in blenders specifically designed for it. Hot liquids create steam pressure inside a sealed jar. In a standard blender, this can cause the lid to pop off suddenly, spraying hot liquid. If you use a standard blender for hot soup, let the liquid cool slightly first, fill the jar no more than halfway, remove the center cap from the lid and cover the opening with a folded kitchen towel, and start on the lowest speed. Blenders with a dedicated hot-soup setting or vented lids handle heat safely — check your model's specifications.
