Active noise cancellation (ANC) is one of the most marketed features on wireless earbuds. Understanding what it actually does — and what it does not do — helps you decide whether you need it, which environments benefit from it, and what to look for beyond the ANC label when comparing earbuds.

How Active Noise Cancellation Works

ANC uses microphones positioned on the outside of the earbud to continuously sample the ambient sound in your environment. The earbud processor analyzes this incoming noise and generates a sound wave that is the inverse — a mirror image — of the ambient sound. When this inverse wave combines with the incoming ambient noise, the two largely cancel each other out through destructive interference before the sound reaches your ears.

When ANC Helps Most

ANC works well for:
