Plastic Shelving Load Capacity: Published Ratings Reference

Plastic shelving is advertised inconsistently. Some manufacturers publish a per-shelf rating, some publish a whole-unit total, and retailer spec fields sometimes disagree with the manufacturer on the same model. This page records what each manufacturer actually publishes for the units we have reviewed, keeps per-shelf and whole-unit figures separate, and derives the two numbers that are more useful than either when you are planning real storage: load per square foot of shelf, and load per linear foot of width.

Method

  • Scope. The five freestanding plastic and resin shelving units currently reviewed on our plastic garage shelves page. This is not a survey of the whole market.
  • Sources. Manufacturer product pages where the manufacturer publishes specifications, and the manufacturer-supplied specification block on the retail listing otherwise. Each page was rendered in a browser and read directly, retrieved 2026-08-11.
  • Precedence. Where a manufacturer and a retailer disagree, the manufacturer figure is used and the disagreement is stated in the table notes.
  • No inferred totals. A whole-unit total is shown only where the manufacturer publishes one. Per-shelf rating multiplied by shelf count is not treated as a substitute.
  • Derived columns. Load per square foot is the published per-shelf rating divided by shelf width x depth in square feet. Load per linear foot is the per-shelf rating divided by shelf width in feet. Capacity per pound of unit weight uses the published whole-unit total, so it is blank where no total is published.
  • Limits. Published ratings assume evenly distributed static loads on a level floor with the unit assembled as instructed. They are manufacturer claims, not independent load tests, and we have not destructively tested these units.

Derived figures

Shelf area is width x depth. Load per square foot is the more honest planning number for dense items, because a rating assumes the weight is spread across the whole panel.

What the numbers show

Shelf strength per unit of area is nearly constant across brands. The published ratings work out to 30.033.6 lbs per square foot of shelf, a spread of roughly ten percent, even though the whole-unit totals range from 600 to 800 lbs and the brands are unrelated. If you are comparing two plastic units and one advertises a much larger total, it is very likely selling you area or an extra tier rather than a stronger shelf.

Per-shelf ratings are the comparable figure; totals are not. Two of the five manufacturers here publish no whole-unit total at all. Comparisons that show a total for every unit have either found a figure the manufacturer does not publish or have multiplied it out silently. Where totals are published they happen to equal per-shelf times shelf count, which is exactly why the omission in the other two cases is worth taking at face value rather than filling in.

Width drives load per linear foot more than rating does. The two 200 lb shelves differ by nearly seven lbs per linear foot purely because one is 35.9 inches wide and the other is 40. For long items spanning the shelf — lumber offcuts, conduit, ladders — that figure matters more than the headline number.

Retailer spec fields are not a safe source. One unit in this set has a retailer capacity field reading 400 lbs against a manufacturer-stated 600 lb total. Any reference built by scraping retailer attributes without checking the manufacturer will inherit errors of that size.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add up the per-shelf ratings to get a total capacity?
Not reliably. Three of the five units here publish a whole-unit total, and in every one of those cases the total equals the per-shelf rating multiplied by the shelf count. That makes multiplication tempting, but a manufacturer that declines to publish a total has not certified the frame and legs at that load, and the limiting factor on a plastic unit is usually the leg-to-shelf joint rather than the shelf panel. Where a total is not published, this table leaves it blank.
Why does load per square foot barely change between models?
Across these five units the published per-shelf rating works out to 30.0–33.6 lbs per square foot of shelf surface — a spread of about ten percent despite total ratings ranging from 600 to 800 lbs. Injection-moulded polypropylene shelving is limited by the panel and rib geometry, which is similar across the category. A higher advertised total capacity is generally the result of more shelf area or more tiers, not a stronger shelf.
Do these ratings assume the load is spread out?
Yes. Published shelf ratings assume an evenly distributed load. A concentrated point load — a floor jack on one corner, or a single dense engine part — can exceed the local panel limit well below the rated figure. Treat the per-square-foot column as the useful planning number for anything dense and small.
Are manufacturer and retailer figures always the same?
No, and that is one reason this reference exists. On one unit here the retailer's structured capacity field reads 400 lbs while the manufacturer's own product copy and title both state a 600 lb total across four 150 lb shelves. This table uses the manufacturer figure and records the disagreement rather than quietly picking one.
